Què volen aquesta gent? / What do they want?

De vegades faig de professor. De vegades, de pare. I, de vegades, de coach, i fins i tot de consultor. I em pregunto sovint què volen els meus alumnes, els meus fills, els meus coachees, els meus clients. Molts són adolescents (aquella etapa que va dels 10 als 50 anys, si fa no fa...), i de vegades em sembla que no sé què volen de mi. Per tant, he anat a buscar respostes. I les he trobat a internet. Angela Meiers, professora d'Iowa preocupada com jo pel que volen els seus alumnes, ha publicat a la seva Web una enquesta que va fer als seus alumnes. El que volen, i el que es mereixen. També he trobat un vídeo amb el decàleg del que els alumnes esperen dels seus professors. Us el resumeixo, perquè m'ha semblat que es pot aplicar a tots els àmbits de la meva vida: com a professor, com a coach, com a consultor, en la relació amb els altres en general, em serà molt útil tenir present el que esperen de mi.

1. Somriu-me; això em dóna confiança.
2. Adona't que hi sóc; no sóc estúpid, ni mandrós.
3. Estima'm.
4. Creu en mi; puc canviar.
5. Confia en mi; tots fem errors i jo vull aprendre'n.
6. Escolta'm; les meves opinions importen.
7. Sigues la meva font d'inspiració; jo sóc necessari, puc i vull.
8. Ajuda'm; deixa que faci preguntes, i ensenya'm com; no em diguis nomes com.
9. Dóna'm poder; dóna'm una oportunitat.
10. Honora'm; no sóc només un acudit; mereixo que em respectis.

Què en penseu? Això és el que vosaltres espereu dels vostres professors / pares / coaches / consultors? Quina llista faríeu, els adolescents d'aquí? Espero els vostres comentaris.

Sometimes I am a teacher. Sometimes, I am a parent. And sometimes I am a coach, and even a consultant. And I often ask myself what do others want from me: students, my son and daughter, coachees, clients. Most of them are teenagers (from 10 to 50, more or less...), and sometimes I think I don't know what do they want. So I've been looking for answers. And I have fond them at Internet. Angela Meiers, a teacher for Iowa who is also worried about what do her students want, has posted in her Website the results of an interview to teenagers. What they want, and what they deserve. I have also found a video, with the main 10 points that teenage students want from their teachers. All 10 points can be applied to everything I deal with. And it will be very helpful to keep this list in mind.

1. Smile at me; this will give me confidence.
2. Notice me; I'm not stupid, I'm not lazy.
3. Love me.
4. Believe in me; I can make a change.
5. Trust me; we all make mistakes and I want to learn from them.
6. Hear me; my oppinion matters.
7. Inspire me; I am needed; I can and I will.
8. Help me; let me ask questions; show me how, don't tell me how.
9. Empower me; give me a chance.
10. Honor me; I am not a joke; I deserve to be honored.

Córrer i pensar / To run and to think

Ahir vaig tornar a córrer. Feia dues setmanes que estava "aturat" i, la veritat, ho he trobat molt a faltar: mentre corro, penso. En les meves creences, les meves opinions, i en la manera com interpreto tot el que passa, sempre a partir d'aquestes creences.

Vénen temps de canvis, temps de replantejar-me creences i decidir amb què em quedo i què deixo anar. I mentre corro, vaig fent balanç, convençut que cadascú ha de fer la seva vida, seguir el seu camí, amb passió i gaudint de cada passa. Homes del temps, tatuadores, cuineres, policies, assessores d'imatge, enginyers de teatre... el futur (i el present) és vostre.

Yesterday I started running again. I wasn't running for two weeks and, in fact, I realized how much I missed it: I think while I run. I think about my beliefs, my opinions, and the way I look at everything, according to those beliefs.

Change is coming; it is time to rethink my beliefs and to decide which ones I want to keep, and which ones I'd like to leave. And while running, I realize that everyone havs to follow its way, with passion and enjoying every step. Weathermen, Tatoo artists, chefs, policemen, image consultants, theater engineers... future (and the present) is yours.

Creixement sostenible / Sustainable growth

Plou. El clima ideal per fer revisió i neteja. I, mira per on, he trobat una sèrie d'escrits del 2005, quan em dedicava a escriure cada dia una carta al diari AVUI (alguns van ser publicats, d'altres no). N'hi ha un de l'octubre d'aquell any, sobre la crisi que em semblava que vindria i de com afrontar-la, i que es deia "Creixement sostenible":

Igual que les plantes no poden créixer si no tenen unes bones arrels, les empreses que no estan ben arrelades tindran un creixement feble. Potser, si és temporada de pluges, pugin ufanoses i ben dretes, però quan vingui la sequera –que vindrà puntualment– la planta sense arrels s'assecarà i morirà, mentre es lamenta "com és que jo, tan enlaire com havia arribat, m'he de veure així?" Una bona planta només creixerà si es pot adaptar al terreny que l'alimenta, procurant també de no malmetre'l, no fos cas que, aquell terreny que fa temps era idoni, ara s'hagi tornat erm. Benvolgudes plantes: si voleu créixer de forma sostenible, recordeu-vos de cuidar el vostre entorn més proper, el que us dóna de menjar, i procureu fer-hi arrels profundes.

No recordo si la carta es va arribar a publicar mai, però em temo que, en ple boom econòmic, ningú m'hauria fet cas…

Creieu que avui encara és vàlid, l'escrit? Què signifiquen "les arrels", avui, a les empreses?Espero els vostres comentaris!

It Rains. The weather is ideal for checking and cleaning. And I've found a series of letters I wrote in 2005 to be published in the newspaper AVUI (some of them were actually published). One of these letters was about the crisis I thought it was about to come, and how to overcome it; it was called "Sustainable growth":

As trees can not grow without deep roots, some companies without roots could face weak growth. Maybe during the rain season, they will grow fast and look like very well fitted, but
When drought comes –it will do come– trees without deep roots will dry and die, while regreting "why, after having reached the sky, do I feel like this?" Good trees will only grow if
they can adapt to the land they live in, trying not to damage it as well, just to make sure that the ideal land that it was is still good. Dear trees: if you want to grow in a
sustainable way, remember to take care of your immediate environment, which
gives you food, and try to make deep roots.

I do not remember if the letter was ever published, but I fear that, in the middle of an economic boom, nobody would have paid any attention to it…

Prevenció del blanqueig de capitals -- Anti money-laundering

A Espanya, la Ley 10/2010 de prevenció del blanqueig de capitals i de finançament del terrorisme, estableix les mesures que cal prendre per garantir aquesta prevenció. Aquesta llei és una transposició de la Directiva 2005/60/CE del parlament europeu i del consell. Espanya, doncs ,va trigar 5 anys en incorporar a l'ordenament jurídic el que Europa va decidir. Tot va bé si acaba bé.
El cas és que la directiva europea esta inspirada en la Patriot Act, una llei dels Estats Units elaborada just després dels atacs de l'11 de setembre de 2001. L'esperit d'aquesta llei americana és, bàsicament el següent: les persones i les empreses han d'assegurar-se que cap dels seus clients (o clients dels clients, o clients dels clients dels clients...) i cap dels seus proveïdors (o proveïdors dels proveïdors, o proveïdors dels proveïdors dels proveïdors) és sospitós d'activitats delicitives, ni de finançar-les per activa o per passiva. I aquesta és l'essència de la directiva europea i, també de la llei espanyola. Per si a algú li quedava alguna recança a l'hora de legitimar una llei així, només cal recordar que a Madrid hi va haver uns atemptats brutals que es van finançar amb moltes petites aportacions de petites quantitats. Cap aportació era prou important com per fer saltar les alarmes, i ningú no sospitava res. I va morir molta gent. I la solució que ens ha aportat la llei ha estat incrementar exponencialment la vigilància i no descartar res ni ningú com a sospitós. Podríem dir que "tot s'hi val" per tal que les persones i empreses obligades per aquesta llei a vigilar (els "sujetos obligados") s'assegurin de no fer tractes amb "els dolents", o amb "els amics dels dolents". Tenim, doncs, una llei que diu que la protecció de les dades personals NO és necessària davant la sospita de blanqueig. Tenim una llei que diu que hi ha empreses OBLIGADES a fer un seguiment exhaustiu dels seus clients i de les persones relacionades amb els clients. I tenim un organisme que recull tota aquesta informació, totes les dades (les que surten a les llistes oficials de terroristes i les que surten al Lecturas, a l'Hola i al QMD), i la utilitza en la seva persecució del blanqueig de capitals i del finançament del terrorisme. Cada cop que esclata un escàndol de corrupció, cal felicitar-se per la feina feta per destapar-ho. A l'ombra, vetllant per la nostra seguretat, ens vigilen. I actuen.

I, de tant en tant, em pregunto si no n'estarem fent un gra massa. Potser qualsevol dia em trobo embolicat en algun d'aquests processos, només perquè una amiga meva del facebook va tenir un nòvio que era germà de la veïna d'un noi que havia anat a classe amb un esverat a qui la policia va fitxar durant una manifestació...

The Spanish act Ley 10/2010 about prevention of money laundering and terrorist financing, establishes measures to be taken to ensure such prevention. This act is a transposition of Directive 2005/60/CE of the European Parliament and the Council.
In fact, the European Directive is inspired by the Patriot Act, a U.S. law made right after the attacks of  9/11/2001. The aim of this act is roughly the following: everyone should make sure that none of its clients (or clients of clients, or clients of clients of clients…) and none of its vendors (of vendors of vendors, or vendors of vendors of vendors) is suspicious of terrorism, or actively or passively financing it. And this is the essence of the European Directive and also the Spanish law. If someone thinks that these laws are illegitimate, just remember that Madrid suffered brutal terrorist attacks that were financed with lots of very small quantities. No contribution was important enough to set off alarm bells, and no one suspected anything. So many people died. To avoid this, the Spanish law stablished an exponentially increasing surveillance, because everyone could be a potencial terrorist. We could say that "everything is right" so that people and businesses forced by the law to become watchers (the "sujetos obligados") ensure not to deal with "bad guys" or with "friends of evil". So we have a law that says that the protection of personal data is NOT required before the suspicion of money laundering. We have a law that says companies are FORCED to do extensive monitoring of its clients and people associated with customers. And we have an Organism  that collects all this information, all data (which appear either in the official lists of terrorists or in magazines like "Hello"), and uses them in its pursuit of money laundering and terrorist financing. Whenever a corruption scandal is uncovered, we should be congratulated for the work done to uncover it. In the shadows, ensuring our security, they are watching us. And they act.

And occasionally, I wonder wether we've gone too far. Maybe some day I will find myself involved in one of these processes, just because a friend of mine had a facebook friend who was the brother of a someone's neighbor who had gone to class with someone that was arrested during a protest…
